Organic Mushrooms: From Mycelium to Functional Extracts
-> Our ProjectGrowing your own at home?
If you're just starting out, the easiest way is to begin with a growing kit or a ready-to-harvest block. The substrate is already colonized by mycelium: you don’t need any special equipment, just a suitable location, a little moisture, and a few simple steps.
For a first-time experience, oyster mushrooms are generally the easiest to grow. The Lion’s Mane can also be grown at home, but requires a bit more attention to humidity and ventilation.
If you'd like to learn more, you can then explore grain-based mycelium, liquid mycelium or log starter kits, which allow you to grow your own crops.
The kit and the ready-to-harvest block are the simplest ways to grow mushrooms at home. The substrate is already colonized by mycelium: simply place the block in the right conditions of humidity, light, and ventilation to start fruiting.
The mycelium, on the other hand, is used to start a culture. It is intended primarily for people who want to inoculate a culture medium themselves.
There are several types of mycelium:
- The mycelium on pegs is used to inoculate logs.
- Mycelium is is generally used to inoculate sterilized grains.
- The mycelium on grains is then used to inoculate a substrate made of straw, sawdust, or other suitable materials.
- The mycelium on sawdust can be used to inoculate logs or outdoor beds.
In short: choose a kit or a spawn pack if you want an easy harvest, and mycelium if you want to grow your own crops.
If you're just starting out, we recommend beginning with a kit or a ready-to-grow starter pack that doesn't require any special equipment.
Once you feel comfortable, try growing mycelium on grain or using logs. As you gain more experience, you can upgrade your equipment.
So you don’t need to spend a lot to get started. The most important thing is to choose a product that suits your skill level and learn gradually.
Indoors, you can grow mushrooms in your basement, garage, kitchen, or laundry room—using a ready-to-grow kit, in jars, in bags, or in vertical bags. Most mushrooms will need a little light to grow.
Outdoors, you can grow mushrooms on logs, stumps, straw, or wood chips.
