Instructions for Use

Here is a step-by-step guide to using beech dowels in mushroom cultivation:

Materials needed:

  • Grooved beech dowels
  • Mycelium grown on grain or sawdust
  • Firewood (preferably hardwoods such as oak, beech, or maple)
  • Drill and 8–9 mm drill bit
  • Hammer
  • Protective wax (optional: soy wax, beeswax, paraffin, or green clay)

Inoculation steps:

  1. Preparing the Anchor Bolts:

    • Soak the dowels in water for 24 to 48 hours.
    • Boil the ankles for 30 minutes to sterilize them.
    • Drain them, then place them in a jar or a Unicorn 3T bag.
    • Inoculate the logs with mycelium on grain or sawdust.
    • Incubate the logs at a temperature of 20 to 25°C for 2 to 3 weeks, until the mycelium has completely colonized the logs.
  2. Preparing the Yule Logs:

    • Choose freshly cut firewood (no more than 3 months old). Avoid softwood.
    • Drill holes in the logs using a drill and an 8–9 mm drill bit. The holes should be slightly deeper than the height of the dowels and spaced about 5 cm apart.
  3. Inoculation of Logs:

    • Use a hammer to drive the treated dowels into the holes. Make sure the dowels do not protrude from the holes.
    • Cover the holes with protective wax to prevent contamination and drying out. You can use soy wax, beeswax, paraffin, or green clay.
  4. Incubation:

    • Place the inoculated logs in a shaded area sheltered from the wind. Avoid direct contact with the ground to prevent insect infestations.
    • Keep the logs moist by watering them occasionally, especially during hot weather.
  5. fruiting

    • After an incubation period of 12 to 18 months, your logs will begin to produce mushrooms.
    • A properly inoculated log can produce mushrooms for 3 to 5 years.
