Wheat bran is the outer layer that protects the grains. It is rich in fiber, protein, minerals, and vitamins. It is suitable for most wood-decaying fungi, such as oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms.
The amount of wheat bran added to straw or sawdust can vary depending on the recipe: generally between 10 and 20% by dry weight. It helps increase the productivity and nutritional quality of the mushrooms.
Note that enriching a substrate with wheat bran also makes it more susceptible to contamination (bacteria or mold), so it is all the more important to ensure proper pasteurization or sterilization and to inoculate under the most sterile conditions possible.
