Complete CVG Kit – Coconut Coir, Vermiculite & Gypsum

This complete CVG kit contains the three basic ingredients needed to prepare a growing medium made from coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum. It is designed for growers who want to easily prepare their own homemade growing medium without having to buy each ingredient separately.

The CVG mix is valued for its simplicity, good moisture retention, and light texture. It can be used in various mushroom growing systems, including monotube systems, buckets, or other containers suitable for growing on pasteurized substrate.

Kit contents

Ingredient Quantity Role in the substrate
Compressed coconut fiber 2 blocks weighing approximately 650 g each Substrate base, fibrous structure, and good water retention
Horticultural vermiculite 500 g Improves moisture retention and lightens the mixture
Gypsum – calcium sulfate dihydrate 100 g Improves soil structure and reduces compaction

Why use a CVG substrate?

CVG potting mix is a simple and effective blend made from coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum. Coconut coir forms the base of the mix, vermiculite helps retain water, and gypsum improves the texture of the blend.

This type of substrate is particularly valued for its ease of preparation. It produces an aerated, moist, and uniform mixture that promotes good mycelial colonization when growing conditions are optimal.

Benefits of the Mycosphère CVG Kit

  • Ready to make: all the main ingredients are included in a single kit.
  • Simplified measurement: no need to calculate the basic proportions.
  • Lightweight and uniform substrate: vermiculite improves the texture of the mix.
  • Effective moisture management: ideal for achieving adequate field capacity.
  • Economy size: suitable for multiple batches or larger quantities of substrate.

Sample recipe for making your CVG

To prepare your growing medium with this kit, you can use the following recipe:

  • 1 block of coconut fiber (approx. 650 g)
  • 250 g of horticultural vermiculite
  • 50 g of gypsum
  • About 3.5 to 4 liters of boiling water; adjust as needed to achieve the desired moisture level

The amount of water may vary slightly depending on the batch of coconut coir, the particle size of the vermiculite, and the preparation method. The goal is to achieve a moist but not soggy growing medium.

Instructions for Use

  1. Place the coconut fiber blocks, vermiculite, and gypsum in a clean bucket or heat-resistant container.
  2. Gradually add the boiling water to the mixture.
  3. Close the bucket with a lid and, if possible, wrap it in a blanket to keep it warm longer.
  4. Let it sit for 6–12 hours, until the coconut fiber is fully hydrated and the growing medium has cooled.
  5. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Check the moisture level before use.

How can you check if the humidity is at the right level?

The growing medium should have the right moisture level, often referred to as field capacity. To check this, take a handful of clean growing medium in your hand and squeeze it firmly.

  • If no water comes out, the soil is probably too dry.
  • If a few drops drip out, the moisture level is usually fine.
  • If a lot of water runs out, the growing medium is too wet and should be drained or mixed with some dry material.

What is it used for?

This kit can be used to prepare a CVG substrate in various cultivation settings:

  • monotube cultivation;
  • growing in a bucket or suitable container;
  • preparation of coconut coir substrates for cultivation trials;
  • a base substrate for certain exotic or medicinal mushrooms, depending on the species being cultivated and the method used.

For wood-growing species such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake, reishi, and lion’s mane, a wood-based substrate enriched with nutrients is generally more suitable. CVG is particularly useful for crops that require a lightweight, moist, nutrient-poor substrate.

Advice from La Mycosphère

Add the water gradually rather than pouring it all in at once. It’s easier to fix a substrate that’s slightly too dry than one that’s too wet. Too much water can lead to fermentation issues, unpleasant odors, or contamination.

Always use clean equipment, allow the substrate to cool completely before inoculation, and follow the hygiene guidelines appropriate for your culture method.
