Who is this for?

Artists, students, designers, architects, schools, makers, researchers: anyone who wants to explore a living, textured, surprising material—and learn through experimentation.

What you can make

  • Small items: pots, vases, design pieces, stage props
  • Sculptures & textures (“skin,” “mineral,” and “fiber” effects)
  • Packaging and cushioning prototypes
  • Samples of panels (acoustic/decorative), tiles, and non-structural bricks

Performance characteristics (strength, acoustics, fire resistance, etc.) depend heavily on the wood species, substrate, density, drying process, and additives.

How it works (simple)

  1. Store in a cool place immediately upon receipt.
  2. Work with proper hygiene (gloves and alcohol) and finely crumble the colonized substrate.
  3. Shape: Fill a mold and press down firmly.
  4. Let it “incubate” for 3 days at room temperature (18–25°C), then dry or treat it to halt growth and stabilize the piece.

Tip: You can remove the mushroom from the mold after 2–3 days and let it incubate a second time outside the mold, in a closed, humid environment, to encourage the mycelium to spread and thicken on the surface.

Contents

  • 1 bag of colonized growing medium (approx. 3 liters, approx. 1.5 kg), ready to use

Storage (important)

This is a perishable product. For best results: refrigerate immediately upon receipt and use as soon as possible after delivery.

Safety & Use

  • Product intended for design / R&D / materials.
  • Non-food.
  • Avoid inhaling dust or spores: work in a well-ventilated area, and wear a mask if you are sanding or drying.
  • If you have allergies to mold or fungi, handle with care.

FAQ

Does that cause mold to grow?

This product is sold by MycoMaterials. It is not intended to be used as a fruiting kit.

How many servings can I make with 3 liters?

It depends on the density/compaction and the additives: several small parts, or 1–2 larger prototypes.

What if I see something white in the bag?

White patches usually indicate growing mycelium; this is normal on a colonized substrate.

What should you do if it smells “strong” or if a color appears?

A very sour smell, bright colors (green/black), or a “powdery” appearance may indicate contamination: it’s best to avoid using it indoors.

How can we stop growth?

Once the piece has been properly bonded, it is dried and/or heat-treated to stabilize it.

Can I add pigments, fibers, or scraps?

Yes: textiles, paper, cardboard… Test in small batches. Be aware, however, that this increases the risk of contamination if the materials are not pasteurized.
