A bit of an oddity in mushroom cultivation, this variety first appeared a few years ago and has become quite popular in North America. It is the result of a cross between a European variety and a Japanese variety. Black Pearl mushrooms offer a good compromise between king oyster mushrooms and oyster mushrooms.
They have a wider stem than oyster mushrooms and a less dense texture than king oyster mushrooms. The caps are rounded like those of king oyster mushrooms, ranging in color from light brown to dark brown with a mottled pattern, depending on maturity and growing conditions. They grow in clusters and are easier to cultivate than king oyster mushrooms.
A variety considered to be part of the Pleurotus ostreatus family. It has a good flavor, reminiscent of oyster mushrooms but with a more pronounced umami note. It has good productivity.
