MycoBois BIO – Enriched substrate, ready for inoculation
- Ready-to-inoculate enriched wood substrate: designed for wood-decaying fungi such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake, lion’s mane, reishi, king oyster mushrooms, pioppino, and nameko.
- Grain-free: MycoBois BIO is a standalone substrate that must be inoculated with pre-colonized grain mycelium.
- Suitable for use in organic farming: made from untreated sawdust and organic grain residues, certified by Certisys (BE-BIO-01).
- Product formulation: a blend designed to provide a good balance of carbon, nitrogen, sugars, and minerals for tree species suited to woody growth.
- Prepared in the laboratory: the substrate is hydrated, sterilized, and then sealed to minimize the risk of contamination before use.
MycoBois BIO is an enriched, sterilized, and inoculation-ready wood substrate designed for growing wood-decaying mushrooms, including oyster mushrooms, shiitake, lion’s mane, reishi, eryngii, pioppino, nameko, and other species that grow on wood-based substrates.
It is used with mycelium that has already colonized the grain. You will receive a bag of sterile, uninoculated substrate, ready to be inoculated under clean conditions.
Not to be confused with the MycoBag All-in-One
MycoBois BIO is a grain-free, enriched wood substrate. It must be inoculated with grain-based mycelium.
The MycoBag All-in-One, on the other hand, already contains a portion of grain and a portion of CVG substrate in the same bag. It is intended for crops that grow well in this type of mixture.
In short: for wood-growing mushrooms such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake, reishi, or lion’s mane, opt for MycoBois BIO.
Why choose MycoBois BIO?
- Ready-to-inoculate substrate: the bag is already prepared, moistened, sterilized, and sealed.
- Enriched wood-based substrate: a mixture of beech sawdust and organic grain byproducts.
- Suitable for wood-decaying mushrooms: oyster mushrooms, shiitake, lion’s mane, reishi, king oyster mushrooms, pioppino, nameko, etc.
- Saves time: no need to prepare, moisten, or sterilize your growing medium yourself.
- Suitable for use in organic farming: product inspected and certified by Certisys BE-BIO-01.
Composition
Our growing medium is made from untreated wood shavings (primarily beech), free of adhesives and chemical additives, and organic cereal byproducts.
Its formulation is designed to provide the mycelium with a substrate balanced in carbon, nitrogen, sugars, and minerals. This enriched base promotes effective colonization and fruiting in wood-adapted species.
Recommended species
MycoBois BIO is particularly suitable for wood-decaying fungi, that is, species that naturally break down wood.
- Oyster mushrooms
- Shiitake mushrooms
- Lion's Mane / Hericium
- Reishi
- King Oyster Mushrooms
- Piopino
- Nameko
- Other wood-dwelling species adapted to wood-enriched substrates
For growing on CVG substrate or in all-in-one bags, we recommend checking out our MycoBag All-in-One.
Contents
- About 5 kg of enriched wood substrate
- Packaged in a Unicorn XLS-A microfilter bag
- Sterilized, sealed, and uninoculated substrate
Preservation
The bags can be stored for about 3 to 4 weeks in a cool, clean room away from direct sunlight.
For best results, however, we recommend using them shortly after receipt. The sooner the substrate is inoculated, the more you minimize the risks associated with prolonged storage.
How do you inoculate MycoBois BIO?
To inoculate this substrate, use pre-colonized grain mycelium.
We recommend an inoculation rate of 5 to 10%, or approximately 250 to 500 g of grain-based mycelium per 5-kg bag.
- Work in a place that is as clean as possible.
- Clean the outside of the bag, especially the opening area, with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a suitable disinfectant solution.
- Open the bag just below the seal using a clean, disinfected blade.
- Add 250 to 500 g of colonized grain mycelium.
- Seal the bag using a heat sealer, clean tongs, or suitable adhesive tape.
- Mix the substrate to distribute the mycelium throughout the bag.
- Place the bag in an incubation area at a temperature of approximately 20–24 °C, depending on the species being grown.
Tip if you are not working under sterile conditions
Opening a sterile bag in an uncontrolled environment increases the risk of contamination.
If your inoculation area isn’t perfectly clean, you can pour the grain-based mycelium onto the surface of the substrate, seal the bag, and avoid mixing it too vigorously. Colonization will be slower, but this can reduce the risk of spreading any contaminants throughout the bag.
Recommended equipment
- grain spawn
- 70% alcohol or an appropriate disinfectant
- Clean and disinfected blade
- Heat sealer, clamps, or suitable adhesive tape
- A laminar flow hood or a glove box if you want to work under more hygienic conditions
Transportation
Due to the size and weight of the bags, we can ship up to 4 bags per package. Therefore, it is best to order in multiples of 4 whenever possible.
For larger orders, we can ship up to approximately 80 bags per pallet. Shipping costs vary depending on the destination and the order volume.
In some cases, the website may not calculate shipping costs correctly for large orders or orders that include multiple bulky items. In such cases, we reserve the right to contact you to adjust the shipping costs or the quantities being shipped.
Important Notes
- Condensation may form inside the bags during transport. This is usually due to temperature fluctuations and is not a problem in itself.
- Claims must be submitted within 10 days of receipt, with the bags still sealed and detailed photos of the issue.
- Complaints can be submitted via email through our contact page.
Organic certification
All of our organic products are certified by Certisys Belgium under registration number BE-BIO-01.
