Creating with Mycelium

During this four-hour workshop, you’ll create a piece using mycomaterial made from a substrate colonized by reishi mycelium. You’ll prepare a mold, fill it, and then take your creation home—still alive—so it can continue to grow there.

What is a mycomaterial?

Mycelium is the network of filaments that makes up the vegetative part of a fungus. As it grows within a substrate composed of plant matter, it gradually binds the plant material together. This results in a material that can be grown in a mold and then dried to preserve its shape.

Creating with mycelium means working with a living material: we choose the conditions and the initial form, but we also allow room for its growth and variations.

A workshop with Rémi Ercole

Rémi Ercole is a fungal artist. In his artistic practice, he regards mycelium as a living being with which he collaborates. Rather than entirely imposing a specific outcome on the material, he explores what emerges from the interplay between an intention, a form, and the way the mycelium develops.

Rémi will guide you through this experience, from designing the mold to shaping the clay, and will explain how to care for your piece after the workshop.

What You're Going to Do

• Learn about mycelium and understand how it can be turned into a material.
• Come up with a shape and prepare a mold that's suitable for your project.
• Fill the mold with a substrate that has already been colonized by reishi mycelium.
• Understand the conditions necessary for continued growth.
• Learn when and how to remove your piece from the mold and then dry it at home.

Do you already have a mold you'd like to try? You can bring it along. If you don't have one, you can make one right there with Rémi's help.

You'll take your creation home with you

By the end of the workshop, your piece will not yet have reached its final form: the mycelium will continue to grow at home. You’ll leave with your piece—which is still growing—and instructions for incubation, removal from the mold, and drying. The result may vary from one creation to another: this element of the unexpected is part of the experience.
