Organic wheat bran is a raw material used to enrich mushroom growing media. It consists of the outer layer of the wheat kernel and naturally contains fiber, protein, minerals, and vitamins.
In mushroom cultivation, wheat bran is often added to straw, sawdust, or other substrates to increase their nutritional value. It is particularly suitable for wood-decaying mushrooms such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and other species grown on enriched substrates.
Why use wheat bran in mushroom cultivation?
- Substrate enrichment: provides additional nutrients to straw or sawdust.
- Improved productivity: can boost performance when used in a suitable recipe.
- Versatile substrate: suitable for use in many recipes for wood-decaying fungi substrates.
- Belgian organic product: produced in Belgium using biodynamic farming methods.
Recommended dosage
The amount of wheat bran to use depends on the crop, the growing medium, and your sterilization or pasteurization method.
Generally, wheat bran is used at a rate of 10 to 20 percent of the substrate's dry weight.
Example: For 10 kg of dry sawdust, you can add about 1 to 2 kg of wheat bran, depending on the recipe you're making.
Be careful of cross-contamination
Adding wheat bran makes the growing medium more nutritious, but also more susceptible to bacterial contamination and mold.
To achieve good results, it is therefore important to:
- thoroughly pasteurize or sterilize the enriched substrate;
- use clean, healthy mycelium;
- work in conditions that are as clean as possible;
- Avoid excess moisture in the growing medium.
For highly enriched media, sterilization in an autoclave or a suitable pressure cooker is generally preferable to simple pasteurization.
