The Coprin Chevelu is an easy mushroom to grow, but it is extremely fragile. Its shelf life is limited to 1-2 days, which explains why it is rarely marketed. However, it is very appreciated for its delicate flavor. The hat has a melting texture, while the feet remain crunchy.

This fungus prefers substrates rich in nitrogen and organic matter, often found near composts, old manure piles, and grazed meadows. After harvest, coprin tends to liquefy quickly, forming a black ink which is its natural spore dispersal mechanism. It must therefore be harvested young, before the edges of the caps begin to blacken, and must be stored immediately in the refrigerator.

Young hairy goats can be cut into strips and dried for better conservation. Once well established in outdoor cultivation, this mushroom can fruit for several consecutive years.

Mycelium storage: 1 month in the refrigerator.

🌱 Growing Conditions & Substrates

The Coprin Chevelu can be grown indoor or outdoor.

For outdoor cultivation , you can take inspiration from our instructions on growing stropharia outdoors: Growing stropharia in the garden .

Note that coprins require more nitrogen than stropharia. To do this, you can enrich the straw with hay, chicken manure, rabbit manure, horse manure, etc. Pelleted manure is also a convenient option because it is often already pasteurized. Dead leaves and compost edges can also work well.

You will get better results by pasteurizing your substrate, but it is possible to get good results outdoors without pasteurization.

In indoor cultivation, the substrates are pasteurized (for example, immersion for 30-60 minutes in water at 70°C) before being sown and placed in trays. After colonization, the substrate must be covered with a casing layer consisting of peat or potting soil. Some also add gypsum or (slaked) lime to this casing layer.
