reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum), also called "mushroom of immortality", has been used by different cultures for millennia for its many medicinal properties. It is renowned for its beneficial effects on the immune system, its ability to reduce stress, and its potential to improve sleep quality.

Reishis are distinguished by their hard and fibrous orange-red caps, which makes their consumption in raw form difficult. They are generally consumed in the form of herbal tea, powder, or extracts. In traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, dosages vary from 1.5 g to 9 g per day of dried mushroom or the equivalent in the form of tablets, capsules, or solid or liquid extracts. In addition, the dense and resistant mycelium of reishi is increasingly explored in the field of mycomaterials for its insulating and ecological properties.

    🏗️ Mycomaterials

These bundles can also be used to create your own mycelium shapes. Break the block of sawdust, keeping the plastic closed, kneading it until you obtain a powdery texture. Then you can use this substrate by placing it in your previously cleaned molds. After a few days at room temperature, the mycelium will reform into a solid block. You can then unmold it and dehydrate it in the oven to stop the growth of the mycelium, creating a biodegradable and insulating material.

    🌿 Utilization

To cultivate reishis, we recommend the following technique:

    • Leave the plastic bag closed, trying to maximize the air inside. If necessary, open the bag slightly to let in air, then seal it with tape. This will create a mini greenhouse with a very high CO2 level, which will encourage the development of antlers. This step can take between 30 and 60 days.
    • When the feet reach about 6 inches, or two-thirds of the air space in the bag, open the bag on top to create an air inlet. This will encourage hat development. Let the reishis grow for about 30 more days until they are ready to harvest.

Reishi prefers moderate temperatures (20-30°C) and a humid environment. If your growing space is dry, remember to moisten regularly with a spray. Also make sure that the bundle is not constantly in water to avoid rot. Place it in an area with indirect light, similar to the understory conditions where it grows naturally.

    🏡 Where to grow it?

Reishi can be grown indoors, in places like the kitchen, garage, or basement. It prefers a warm environment (20-30°C) with high humidity. Be sure to avoid drafts, heaters, and direct exposure to sunlight, which could dry out the bundle.

    🌾 Harvest & Conservation

Generally, only one harvest is carried out on this type of bale. However, after the first harvest, you can try to obtain a second harvest in the vegetable garden by burying the bundle under 2 to 3 cm of soil. This could yield a small harvest early the following summer.

Reishis will keep for about 3 to 4 weeks in a paper bag in the refrigerator. For longer storage, they can be dried. Drying extends their lifespan and concentrates their active ingredients. Once dried, they can be stored in an airtight container, protected from light and humidity.
