Gray oyster mushroom "Blue Oyster" – Pleurotus ostreatus KB1 (Columbinus)
Highly productive and easy-to-grow mycelium, suitable for many substrates (straw, sawdust, logs). The KB1 strain produces beautiful caps and can develop bluish hues at low temperatures.
Originating from the temperate forests of Europe, the oyster mushroom naturally grows on dead trunks and branches. It is mostly found in autumn and late winter. Today, it is one of the most cultivated mushrooms worldwide, appreciated for its flavor and ease of cultivation.
Characteristics of the KB1 strain
- Caps: 5 to 15 cm
- Color: light gray to dark brown (depending on conditions)
- Specificity: bluish hues at 10–15°C at the start of fruiting
- Texture: more tender than many oyster mushrooms, thick stems
- Asset: excellent productivity and good shelf life
❄️ Storage: keep refrigerated (1 to 4°C) and ideally use within one month of receipt.

🌱 Growing conditions
Oyster mushrooms can be cultivated year-round. Ideal temperature: 12 to 20°C. Maintain high humidity during initiation until the primordia appear.
Mycosphere Tip: to trigger a good fruiting, go through a cooler phase at 10–15°C with 95–100% humidity until the primordia appear, then stabilize around 85–95% during growth.
Harvest: gently twist and pull the clusters by hand before the edges of the caps brown and curl up. Remove the remnants and maintain humidity until the next flush.
🛠️ Recommended substrates
For indoor cultivation: pasteurized straw, pasteurized sawdust, or other lignocellulosic materials.
For a simple and consistent result, we recommend:
- Organic straw pellets (add 1 tsp lime and 2 L cold water per kg of pellets)
- Sawdust-based substrate for wood-loving varieties
For outdoor cultivation: logs or mulches. For log cultivation:

📈 Productivity
On average: 200 to 350 g fresh mushrooms per 1 kg of wet substrate, over 2 to 3 harvests.
FAQ – Grey Oyster Mushroom (KB1)
Which substrate to use?
The grey oyster mushroom is versatile: pasteurized straw, pasteurized sawdust, and other lignocellulosic materials. For a simple and consistent result, organic straw pellets work very well.
How much does it produce?
On average, expect 200 to 350 g of fresh mushrooms per kg of wet substrate, over 2 to 3 harvests.
What is the ideal temperature?
For good results: 12–20°C generally, with a cooler initiation phase at 10–15°C to trigger fruiting.
Is light necessary?
Yes, soft light helps form beautiful caps: about 600–1000 lux during initiation and fruiting.
What inoculation rate?
We recommend 5 to 10% mycelium (grains) relative to the weight of the wet substrate.
