The variety: Pioppino
Our ready-to-grow culture bales allow you to cultivate your own Pioppino mushrooms at home.
Characteristics of the growing substrates:
- Harvest: Between 0.7 and 1 kg of fresh mushrooms over 2-3 harvests.
- Composition: Water, wood shavings, grains, lime, mycelium. Net weight of the bale: approximately 5 kg.
- Dimensions: 25 x 20 x 20 cm (L x W x H)
- Origin: Belgium (Mycosphere)
The Pioppino is an excellent edible mushroom with a crisp texture and a slightly sweet taste reminiscent of hazelnut. The caps (3-5 cm) are dark brown at first, lightening gradually to a cream-beige as they mature. The stems remain crisp when cooked if picked young.
Notes: The harvest indications are estimates based on our experience but are not guaranteed. Productivity depends on growing conditions and the grower's experience.
(*) Our bales are certified organic "BE-BIO-01" by Certisys (Belgium).
Legal notice for Belgium: “Organic growing substrate: Pasteurized and seeded mushroom bed substrate” (Exemption No. EM470.J)
Usage
If you cannot use the bale immediately, store it in the fridge for about 2 weeks.
This variety enjoys warmth (20-27°C) but can also be grown at cooler temperatures down to 12°C. Harvest the mushrooms young, just before the caps open, for better preservation and a more tender texture. Be careful, mushroom growth is very rapid.
There are two fruiting methods:
- Open the top of the bag leaving 15-20 cm of plastic above the substrate, wait for the primordia (mushroom buds) to appear, then gradually lower the plastic to the substrate level.
- Make a cut on the side of the bale at the substrate level and expel the air from the bag through this opening. This technique takes a little longer and tends to produce slightly less, but encourages the development of caps more than stems, resulting in mushrooms with a slightly different taste and texture.
Maintain humidity between 80 and 90% during mushroom growth. Use our mini spray or our professional misters to keep optimal moisture.
Fruiting Parameters

| Relative humidity | 85 to 95% |
| Fruiting duration | 4 to 8 days |
| CO2 concentration | 500-2000 ppm |
| Fresh air exchange | 4 to 8 volumes/hour |
| Light requirement | 500 to 1000 lux |
| Number of harvests | 2 harvests, 10 to 14 days apart |
Where to grow it?
Grow indoors (kitchen, garage, cellar). Pioppinos need some light to grow. Prefer indirect sunlight and avoid anything that could dry out the bale: drafts, heaters, direct sun. Pioppinos like moisture but do not like to be soaked constantly.
Tips
To encourage growth and productivity of the second and third harvests:
- Re-moisten the bags by soaking them overnight in water, then drain and return them to cultivation.
- Give a cold shock by placing the bale overnight in a cool place (fridge or outside). This simulates the arrival of winter and encourages mushroom reproduction.
