The Mushroom

Inonotus obliquus or Polypore oblique

Discover the exceptional power of chaga, the champion of mushrooms for your well-being and health!

Chaga, used for centuries in traditional medicine, is packed with health benefits.

Chaga is a mushroom that primarily grows on birch trees in the boreal and subarctic regions of the planet. These regions include Siberia, Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Canada, and Alaska.

In these cold climates, birch trees provide an ideal environment for chaga growth. The mushroom often establishes itself on aging or weakened birch trees, taking advantage of their hard bark and spongy interior to thrive.

Birch Chaga

It appears as a black, bumpy mass resembling charcoal or burnt bark. Inside this dark outer mass lies a treasure trove of health benefits.

Benefits

Chaga is rich in essential nutrients, including B vitamins, minerals such as potassium, zinc, and iron, and powerful antioxidants like polyphenols.

In addition to boosting your immunity, chaga improves digestion, promoting a healthy and balanced gut. Enjoy its anti-inflammatory properties to soothe your digestive system and maximize the absorption of essential nutrients.

Its delicate aroma has earthy and woody notes with a slight bitterness. Some compare it to coffee or black tea, but it has its distinct flavor. It can be pleasantly used as a coffee substitute. Note: It contains no theine or caffeine.

We offer chaga in two forms:

  • The powder is easier to use as it can be directly infused, added to smoothies, and other preparations, requiring a shorter infusion time.
  • The chunks are less susceptible to oxidation and better preserve their qualities for long-term storage. This form also allows you to see the product's raw quality. In infusions, chunks need to be infused longer and can be used for multiple infusions.

Origin and Harvest

Since chaga is not produced in our regions, we work with a group of experienced foragers who harvest chaga in the virgin forests of Komi, at the foot of the Ural Mountains. The Ural Mountains offer unparalleled purity and ensure total absence of pollution. Winter temperatures can drop to -30°C and rise to +30°C in summer. These significant temperature variations give chaga its best nutritional quality.

The harvesting of our chaga is carried out with a focus on sustainable resource management, which includes:

  1. Responsible Harvesting: Harvesters only take part of the mushrooms, always leaving a minimum amount to allow for regeneration.

  2. Rotation of Harvest Sites: Harvesters avoid repeatedly collecting chaga from the same location, moving to different forest areas to allow mushrooms to replenish in previously harvested zones.

  3. Respect for Host Trees: Chaga grows on living trees, primarily birch. Harvesters ensure not to damage the tree during mushroom collection and only harvest mature chaga while preserving the health of the host tree.

  4. Use of Manual Methods: Manual harvesting of chaga is preferred to minimize damage to the tree and its environment. Tools used are often knives or hatchets to carefully collect the mushroom without causing excessive damage.

  5. Compliance with Local Regulations: Harvesters adhere to local laws and regulations regarding wild mushroom harvesting. This includes harvest quotas, specific harvest periods, or protected areas where harvesting is prohibited.

  6. Encouragement of Natural Regeneration: Harvesters promote the natural regeneration of chaga by protecting previous harvest areas and allowing mushrooms to propagate and reproduce naturally.

These practices aim to maintain ecological balance while allowing responsible and sustainable harvesting of chaga, ensuring the continuous availability of this valuable mushroom for years to come.

After harvesting and before storage, a sorting process eliminates pieces that do not meet quality criteria and removes as much bark and wood as possible to maximize product purity and quality.

Usage

Chaga can be used in various ways depending on your preferences and the available products. Here are some common methods to use chaga:

1. Chaga Infusion

Infusion is one of the most popular ways to use chaga. You can prepare an infusion by boiling chaga chunks or powder in water for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then, strain the liquid and consume it hot or cold. You can add honey or other sweeteners to improve the taste if necessary. Recommendations typically range from 1 to 3 teaspoons of powder per day, approximately 2 to 6 grams. Consume in the morning or at noon, preferably with a meal.

2. Chaga Tincture

Alcohol helps to extract and concentrate the properties of chaga. To make a tincture, place chaga chunks in a glass jar and cover them with strong alcohol. The best option is food-grade ethanol, but you can also use basic alcohol like rum or vodka. Let the mixture sit in a dark place for 3-6 weeks, shaking regularly. Once the tincture is ready, take a few drops diluted in water or your beverage of choice.

3. Chaga Powder

Chaga powder can be added to your smoothies, juices, soups, or other food preparations. The powder mixes easily and can be incorporated into various recipes to enjoy its benefits.

4. Capsules

Chaga powder can be encapsulated for easier daily consumption.

5. Other Ideas

It is important to note that the amount and frequency of chaga use may vary based on your individual tolerance and specific needs. It is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before adding new supplements to your daily routine.

To maximize the benefits of chaga, it is advised to do 2 to 4-week courses, with at least a 2-week break between each course.
