The advantages of pellets compared to straw bales:

  • During the manufacture of pellets or granules, the pressure and the rise in heat eliminate a large part of the bacteria and mold originally present in the straw. We therefore naturally have a cleaner substrate for growing mushrooms with less risk of contamination.
  • Much less dust.
  • No grinding required. They are ready to use: you can use it whenever you need it.
  • Storage takes up 4 times less volume, so you save space. Your bags will also be denser than simply crushed straw, so you will be able to produce more mushrooms on the same surface area.
  • Utilisation facility. You can handle the granules with a small shovel, weigh them in a bucket. Manipulations are much easier than with the classic straw.

Use

Add water to reach 65-70% humidity (i.e. approximately 2 liters of water for 1 kg of pellets). Be careful not to add too much water because these pellets are very absorbent.

We recommend pasteurizing as a precaution, but it is possible to have satisfactory results with oyster mushrooms without pasteurization.

A simple pasteurization consists of adding the right quantity of boiling water to the pellets, letting cool to 35°, and inoculating by mixing the mycelium with the cooled substrate at a rate of 10% mycelium. Work as cleanly as possible to limit contamination.

You can also add lime instead of boiling water: one teaspoon of calcareous lime (slaked lime) for 1 kilo of pellets. The lime will raise the pH, that is to say basify the substrate, which will make it less conducive to bacteria and mold, while leaving free space for our oyster mushroom mycelium which easily adapts to high pH.

You can also order our DIY Kit with everything you need for growing oyster mushrooms.

Example:

5 kg of organic straw pellets mixed with 10 liters of boiling water will give 15 kg of substrate.

A mycelium of 1.5 kg of gray oyster mushrooms will be enough to inoculate this quantity. Which can produce between 3 and 5 kilos of fresh organic oyster mushrooms over 3 harvests spaced 2 weeks apart.

Composition
