Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum or ganoderma multipileum), also known as the "mushroom of immortality," has been valued for millennia in various cultures for its traditional uses. This mushroom contains a variety of active compounds, such as triterpenes and polysaccharides, studied for their role in supporting the immune system and contributing to a balanced way of life.

Reishis are distinguished by their hard, fibrous red-orange caps, which make their consumption in raw form difficult. They are generally consumed as herbal tea, powder, or extracts. In Chinese and Japanese tradition, dosages range from 1.5 g to 9 g per day of dried mushroom or the equivalent in tablets, capsules, or solid or liquid extracts. Moreover, the dense and resilient reishi mycelium is increasingly explored in the field of fungal materials for its insulating and ecological properties.

    🏗️ Fungal Materials

These bales can also be used to create your own mycelium shapes. Break the block of shavings while keeping the plastic closed by kneading it until you obtain a powdery texture. Then, you can use this substrate by placing it in your previously cleaned molds. After a few days at room temperature, the mycelium will reform a solid block. You can then unmold it and dry it in the oven to stop the mycelium growth, thus creating a biodegradable and insulating material.

    🌿 Use

To grow reishis, we recommend the following technique:

    • Keep the plastic bag closed while trying to maximize the air inside. If necessary, slightly open the bag to let air in, then reseal it with tape. This will create a mini greenhouse with a very high CO2 level, which will encourage the development of the stems ("antlers"). This step can take between 30 and 60 days.
    • When the stems reach about 15 cm, which is two-thirds of the air space in the bag, open the bag at the top to create an air inlet. This will encourage the development of the caps. Let the reishis grow for about another 30 days until they are ready to be harvested.

Reishi prefers moderate temperatures (20-30°C) and a humid environment. If your growing space is dry, consider regularly misting with a spray. Also ensure the bale is not constantly sitting in water to avoid rot. Place it in a spot with indirect light, similar to the undergrowth conditions where it naturally grows.

    🏡 Where to grow it?

Reishi can be grown indoors, in places like the kitchen, garage, or cellar. It prefers a warm environment (20-30°C) with high humidity. Be sure to avoid drafts, heaters, and direct sunlight, which could dry out the bale.

    🌾 Harvest & Storage

Generally, only one harvest is done on this type of bale. However, after the first harvest, you can try to get a second harvest in the vegetable garden by burying the bale under 2 to 3 cm of soil. This might yield a small harvest at the start of the following summer.

Reishis keep for about 3 to 4 weeks in a paper bag in the refrigerator. For longer storage, they can be dried. Drying extends their shelf life and concentrates their active principles. Once dried, they can be stored in an airtight container, away from light and moisture.
