The button mushroom is the most consumed mushroom worldwide. It is related to the field agarics commonly found in grazed meadows. Button mushrooms are generally cultivated on a substrate based on pasteurized composted manure.
It is a layer mushroom, which means it grows on a horizontally laid substrate, covered with a casing layer. This layer functions to maintain constant humidity and to provide certain bacteria favorable to mushroom fruiting.
To learn more about small-scale mushroom cultivation, we recommend the following readings:
👉 For semi-professional use: Agrodoc 2: Small-scale mushroom cultivation (Agaric, Volvaire)
⚠️ Note that button mushrooms are not the easiest to grow. Compost preparation requires some technique. If you are new to mushroom cultivation, we recommend starting with our ready-to-grow button mushroom kits or our grey oyster mushroom myceliums.
Storage: 1 month in the refrigerator.

📊 Cultivation parameters
Inoculation rate: 0.5 to 5% mycelium relative to the wet weight of compost. It is recommended to start with 5% mycelium to limit contamination risks and gradually reduce this rate as techniques improve.
Example: 1.5 kg of mycelium allows inoculating between 30 and 300 kg of compost, producing between 6 and 60 kg of fresh mushrooms over 2 harvests under optimal conditions.
