Manual

To use grooved beech dowels in myciculture, here is a step-by-step guide:

Necessary materials:

  • Grooved beech dowels
  • Mycelium on grain or on sawdust
  • Wooden logs (preferably hardwoods such as oak, beech or maple)
  • Drill and 8-9 mm bit
  • Hammer
  • Protective wax (optional: soy wax, beeswax, paraffin or green clay)

Inoculation steps:

  1. Preparation of the Anchors :

    • Submerge the ankles in water for 24 to 48 hours.
    • Boil the dowels for 30 minutes to sterilize them.
    • Drain them then place them in a jar or a 3T Unicorn bag.
    • Inoculate the ankles with mycelium on grain or sawdust.
    • Incubate the pegs at a temperature of 20 to 25°C for 2 to 3 weeks, until the mycelium completely colonizes the pegs.
  2. Preparation of the Logs :

    • Choose freshly cut logs (maximum 3 months). Avoid softwoods.
    • Drill holes in the logs using the drill and an 8-9mm drill bit. The holes should be slightly deeper than the height of the dowels and spaced about 5cm apart.
  3. Inoculation of Logs :

    • Insert the inoculated dowels into the holes using a hammer. Make sure the dowels do not stick out of the holes.
    • Cover the holes with protective wax to prevent contamination and drying out. You can use soy wax, beeswax, paraffin or green clay.
  4. Incubation :

    • Place the inoculated logs in a shaded area sheltered from the winds. Avoid direct contact with the ground to prevent insect infestations.
    • Keep the logs moist by watering them occasionally, especially in hot weather.
  5. Fruiting :

    • After an incubation period of 12 to 18 months, your logs will begin to produce mushrooms.
    • A properly inoculated log can produce mushrooms for 3 to 5 years.
