The variety: Pioppino
Our ready-to-grow culture blocks allow you to grow your own Pioppino mushrooms at home.
Characteristics of the growing substrates:
- Harvest: Between 0.7 and 1 kg of fresh mushrooms over 2-3 harvests.
- Composition : Water, wood shavings, cereals, lime, mycelium. Net weight of the Fruiting Block: +-5 kg.
- Dimensions: 25 x 20 x 20 cm (L x W x H)
- Origin : Belgium (Mycosphere)
The Pioppino is an excellent edible mushroom with a crunchy texture and a slightly sweet taste reminiscent of hazelnut. The caps (3-5 cm) are dark brown at first, lightening gradually to cream-beige as they mature. The stems remain crunchy when cooked if picked young.
Notes: Harvest indications are estimates based on our experience but are not guaranteed. Productivity depends on growing conditions and the producer's experience.

Usage
If you cannot use the block immediately, store it in the fridge for about 2 weeks.
This variety likes warmth (20-27°C) but can also be grown at cooler temperatures down to 12°C. Harvest the mushrooms young, just before the caps open, for better preservation and a more tender texture. Be careful, mushroom growth is very rapid.
There are two fruiting methods:
- Open the top of the bag leaving 15-20 cm of plastic above the substrate, wait for the appearance of primordia (mushroom buds), then gradually lower the plastic to the substrate level.
- Make a cut on the side of the block at the substrate level and push the air out of the bag through this opening. This technique takes a bit more time and tends to produce a little less, but promotes the development of caps more than stems, resulting in mushrooms slightly different in taste and texture.
Maintain humidity at 80 to 90% during mushroom growth. Use our minispray or our professional misters to keep optimal humidity.

Where to grow it?
Grow indoors (kitchen, garage, cellar). Pioppinos need a bit of light to grow. Prefer indirect sunlight and avoid anything that could dry out the block: drafts, heaters, direct sun. Pioppinos like humidity but do not like to be constantly soaked.
Tips
To encourage the growth and productivity of the second and third harvests:
- Re-moisten the bags by soaking them overnight in water, then drain and put them back into cultivation.
- Give a thermal shock by placing the log in a cool place overnight (fridge or outside). This simulates the arrival of winter and encourages mushroom reproduction.
