Gray oyster mushroom "Blue Oyster" (Pleurotus ostreatus var. KB1 - Columbinus)

Native to the temperate forests of Europe, the oyster mushroom usually grows on old trunks or dead branches. It is mainly found in autumn and late winter. This mushroom is rich in proteins, B vitamins, and various amino acids. They also contain beta-glucans which are known for their beneficial health effects.

The oyster mushroom is very easy to cultivate. Hardy, it adapts to a variety of substrates, such as straw and wood sawdust. Today, it is the second most cultivated mushroom in the world.

The caps measure between 5 and 15 cm, with colors ranging from light gray to dark brown, depending on growing conditions.

Our KB1 variety belongs to the "pleurotus columbinus" group. These mushrooms show bluish hues at low temperatures (10-15°C) at the beginning of fruiting.

This variety produces large caps and thick stems, with a texture more tender than most other oyster mushrooms. It is also the most productive strain we have, offering excellent flavor and good shelf life.

❄️ We recommend storing the myceliums in the refrigerator (between 1 and 4°C) and using them within a month of receipt.

🌱 Growing conditions

Oyster mushrooms can be cultivated year-round, with an ideal temperature between 12 and 20°C. Maintain high humidity at the start of fruiting until buds appear.

For harvesting, gently twist the clusters by hand before the edges of the caps brown and curl up. Remove any remaining mushroom pieces and maintain humidity until the next harvest.

🛠️ Substrates

For indoor cultivation: Use pasteurized straw, pasteurized wood chips, or other lignocellulosic materials.

Use pasteurized straw, pasteurized wood chips, or other lignocellulosic materials, indoors or outdoors. We recommend our organic straw pellets which work particularly well with oyster mushrooms, simply adding 1 teaspoon of lime and 2 liters of cold water per kg of pellets.

Our wood chip-based substrate suitable for lignicolous varieties will also work very well.

For outdoor cultivation: Use logs or mulches.

📚 This data comes from the book "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" by P. Stamets. It is provided for informational purposes only, as each mushroom grower has specific cultivation conditions, so individual variations may occur.

📈 Productivity

The average harvest is 200 to 350 g of fresh mushrooms per 1 kg of wet substrate, over 2 to 3 harvests.

Mycelium as expected but final result disappointing!

Despite all the precautions taken in preparing the substrate (Straw + coffee grounds) pasteurizing part with lime and another part in a pot boiling for 1 hour, I ended up with a contamination that kills the mycelium that had spread.

Everything seemed to be going roughly well the first 2 weeks and then at the moment of fruiting it deteriorated!

I will try again but I need to understand where the problem is!!!
