Pre-Order: Nutrient Bags for Organic Morel Cultivation
- Nutrient bag for growing Morels .
- Increase your harvests.
- Certified organic BE-BIO-01 Certisys
- Available from October 2024.
Our nutrient bags are made of a mixture of organic cereals and organic matter. They are sterilized in an autoclave and packaged in a laboratory.
Required quantities:
Size of the mycelium bag | Seeded area | Number of nutrient bags needed | Harvest Potential |
---|---|---|---|
1.5 kg | About 5 m² | 5 nutrient bags | 1-2 kg of morels |
3 kg | About 10 m² | 10 nutrient bags | 2-4 kg of morels |
Why use exogenous food bags?
The morel will first feed on its so-called "endogenous" food, the one found in the soil. Quickly, the morel mycelium will then need to be fed with so-called "exogenous" food, which is placed directly on the soil. This greedy fungus needs inputs of sugars (starches, cellulose, and simple sugars).
For this, we recommend our nutrient bags which should be placed with an opening towards the ground. Another technique is to provide cooked apples, cut in half and placed with the opening towards the mycelium's blast.
The morel mycelium will thus move from a rich environment (its inoculation point), through a nutrient-poor environment (the soil), to once again a sugar-rich environment (the exogenous food). It is this alternation of environmental richness that will allow it to properly develop its sclerotia, which will then enable it to produce beautiful morels.
Timing
When to place the nutritional bags?
When the mycelium bursts are well present (visible presence of mycelium on the soil surface), usually 1 to 2 weeks after mycelium inoculation, the nutritional bags are placed on the visible mycelium.
For the mycelium to enter the bags, you will need to open them. Work with clean hands for this step and clean the surface of your bag with tap water if it has been in contact with soil or a dirty surface. To open them, you can either make a hole of about 2 cm with a storm lighter or make a few 2-3 cm crosses with a clean knife. Place the open surface directly on the mycelium. Avoid touching or moving the bags until the end of the cultivation, as this negatively impacts the mycelium.
These food bags will be left in place for a few weeks, without touching them except in case of contamination by molds or insects, for example. By carefully observing the bags, you should see the mycelium colonizing the grains in the days following placement. Around February-March-April, when temperatures begin to rise, about 2-3 weeks before fruiting, these bags will be removed to encourage fruit growth.
If you cannot use the bags immediately after receipt, we advise storing them in a clean, cool place and using them within 3-4 weeks of receipt.
We recommend adding 1 to 2 nutritional bags per square meter.
Note: All warranty claims must be submitted with the bags still sealed in their plastic within 10 days of receiving the package. Claims are made by email with detailed photos of the problem.
We guarantee the sterility of the bags upon receipt of the package, but we do not guarantee the success of the cultivation, which depends on many parameters, including the experience of the mycologist.
When to remove the bags?
-
Withdrawal Period : Nutritional bags generally need to be removed about 2 to 3 weeks before the expected fruiting, which often corresponds to March-April, when temperatures start to rise.
-
Signs of Withdrawal : You can observe the mycelium colonizing the grains in the days following the placement of the bags. Once the mycelium turns an orange then brown color, it indicates it is drawing resources and is ready for the next step.
-
Withdrawal Conditions : Make sure the mycelium has fully colonized the substrate before removing the bags. This ensures that the mycelium has accumulated enough nutrients to support fruiting.
