Food-grade paraffin wax
After inserting the mycelium plugs into the logs, the holes are usually sealed with wax. This step is essential to ensure good mycelium recovery. Based on our experience, you need about 50 g of wax for a log approximately 1 meter long inoculated with 50 plugs, which is just under one gram per plug, allowing a slight surplus to also protect the ends of the log.
Paraffin wax helps to protect the mycelium from drying out while forming an effective barrier against insects, molds, and other contaminants. Sealing the holes is a key step to maximize the chances of successful inoculation.
We use a clear food-grade paraffin, specially adapted for log inoculation. It melts easily, applies cleanly, and hardens quickly as it cools, providing lasting protection.
Usage tip: in cold weather, the wax can harden quickly. Using a small wax warmer or an electric slow cooker helps keep the paraffin at the right temperature throughout the operation.
